We’ve spent over a decade developing employee benefits programs to help our clients help their employees. And because of our efforts over the last 12 years, we have more than 100 qualified retirement plan clients with a collective nearly half a billion dollars in assets.
Our success stands out, and after a month-long nomination process, Tim Olson, our Managing Partner, stands out as EBA’s Advisor of the Year based on his comprehensive approach, genuine character and his best practices.
We’re proud of the services we give and so is the Employee Benefit Advisor.
A little bit of history
“We feel [employing salaried investment advisers] brings us to another level, because your normal employee benefits consulting firm is not going to have a single [retirement] adviser… We think we have a great service model that will stand the test of time.”
Tim was on a mission. After some time dedicated to service at Gardner & White, he noticed a change in the system, one he wasn’t in tune with. He didn’t agree with their distribution model anymore – field customer service representatives were replaced with call centers.
He wanted to continue that ideal of great customer service. When he began his own benefits company in 2003, he took 95% of his clients with him. Tim’s idea of service hasn’t waned and has resulted in a 30-year residence of 14% of his clients, another 31% have stayed for 20 years and 19% for 10.
Tim Olson, Managing Partner with @TheOlsonGroup had a vision in mind. Read more about how it all started:
Blend of benefits
Small or large, Tim’s team provides great benefits for employers and their staff. Vetter Health Services, a company of 3,600 employees, is able to give their employees the security and stability they need. Rhonda Flanigan, Chief People Officer, said:
“I think he can understand where people are with regard to their finances and really help them understand not only the retirement side but why it is important to have good insurance. A lot of our team members, they don’t make a lot of money… So for him to be able to go in and say, ‘I see what you’re making. I know how important it is to be able to feed your family and clothe your family, but it’s also really important to preserve what you have’… he does get that.”
His knowledge of benefits have never stagnated. He is constantly growing his knowledge because in the world of employee benefits, it never sits still so why should he? Times change, and it’s Tim’s goal to make sure his team is on top of any questions you have.
A splash of character
Aside from the passion for golf, he has a passion for the growth of his team and his clients. The Olson Group teaches their staff on the ideals and trends in the benefits space, but ultimately, they want to teach them how to use programs more effectively.
There’s a sense of togetherness among the team and throughout their communities. The company donates between $30,000 and $50,000 to 20 charities a year, many of them healthcare-related organizations whether they need a new MRI machine or send a member of the Nursing Home Association to lobby in Washington, D.C. and everything in between.
Now what?
As a member of the National Association of Health Underwriters, Tim is active on the regional level, participating in a number of compliance-related speaking engagements.
With the DOL audit comping, it’s important Tim helps his clients get prepared for the impending storm. HIPAA, COBRA, ERISA and SPD all have compliance regulations that affect employers even if The Olson Group doesn’t work on their benefits specifically, they need to be aware of.
Monday morning meetings at The Olson Group help the team brainstorm the best ways to educate their clients for the sake of employee prosperity. “Our mission statement is to inform, educate and empower employees to make the best in benefit decisions for themselves and their families.”
